“Healthcare costs increased 5.6% this year and have increased by 4.8% annually since 2021,” said Dave Liner, co-author of the Milliman Medical Index.

Looking ahead, the U.S. healthcare sector will likely continue to face an elevated level of uncertainty due to evolving macroeconomic conditions, particularly inflation. While general inflation in the United States recently hit a four-decade high, medical inflation typically lags by six to 12 months. We may see the full impact of this trend in the coming year.

About the Milliman Medical Index

Since 2005, the Milliman Medical Index (MMI) has analyzed the projected total cost of healthcare for a hypothetical U.S. family of four covered by an employer-sponsored preferred provider organization (PPO) plan.

Unlike many healthcare cost reports, the MMI measures the total cost of healthcare benefits, not just the employer’s share of the costs, and not just premiums.
